Right winger Derek Dorsett talks with Bob McElligott about the past season

Was there a more impressive breakout season among Blue Jackets players than the one turned in by Derek Dorsett? It’s hard to argue with a career-high 12 goals and 20 points, but there are a lot more layers to his emergence than what shows up on the scoresheet.

Two different head coaches entrusted him with the responsibility of playing against opposing teams’ top lines, and as the season progressed, Dorsett was in the top penalty-killing rotation as well. He finished 2011-12 as the NHL’s leader in penalty minutes, supplanting Philadelphia’s Zac Rinaldo on the final day of the season.

“Obviously, at the start of the year it wasn’t something I was setting out to do,” Dorsett told Bob McElligott of Blue Jackets radio. “But right there, in the final home stretch, it was there and I took advantage of it.”
