Blue Jackets Ink Prospect Michael Chaput to Three-Year Entry Level Contract

The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed center Michael Chaput to a standard three-year entry level contract, club Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Scott Howson announced today.

Chaput (pronounced sha-PUT), 20, registered 21 goals and 42 assists for 63 points, had 47 penalty minutes and a +39 plus/minus rating in 57 games with Shawinigan of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in 2011-12. He led the club in assists, while ranking second in points and third (tied) in game-winning goals (four). He added 4-8-12 and two penalty minutes in 11 playoff games, helping the Cataractes reach the QMJHL semifinals.

Philadelphia’s first pick, 89th overall, in the 2010 Entry Draft, Chaput was acquired along with Greg Moore from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for left wing Tom Sestito on February 28, 2011. A native of Ile Bizard, Quebec, he has tallied 77-110-187 with 238 penalty minutes and a cumulative plus/minus rating of +49 in 216 career QMJHL games with Shawinigan and Lewiston.
