COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS KICK OFF \u201CICE WEEK\u201D AT NATIONWIDE ARENA ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19


COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets invite fans, hockey teams and community groups to take the ice at Nationwide Arena during “Ice Week,” which kicks off Friday, Oct. 19 with an exclusive skate for season ticket holders followed by “24 Hours of Hockey.” The schedule of on-ice activities concludes on Sunday, Oct. 28 with a Halloween-themed event featuring a wide variety of activities for adults and children. All of the “Ice Week” activities are offered free of charge.

“The wide variety of activities scheduled during ‘Ice Week’ gives us a unique and direct way to engage with our fans, our local hockey associations and our community partners,” said John Browne, Columbus Blue Jackets’ senior vice president and chief marketing officer. “We’re sincerely grateful for their ongoing support and we hope that all the hockey teams, skating groups and families enjoy the opportunity to skate on the same rink as the Blue Jackets.”

“24 Hours of Hockey” features an around-the-clock schedule of games from 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 19 through 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20 and includes more than 450 players representing nearly every age and skill level. The first puck drops with the Ohio AAA Blue Jackets (Pee Wee Minors, 11 yr. olds) taking on Cincinnati-based Team Ohio. The overnight schedule belongs to the Chiller Adult Hockey League as their teams have the ice from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. The morning resumes with six youth hockey games before Ohio State University’s Club Hockey squad hosts Grand Valley State at 1:45 p.m. The hockey marathon concludes with sessions featuring Ohio Sled Hockey at 4:30 p.m. and American Special Hockey Association, which serves individuals with developmental disabilities, at 6 p.m.

The following week features opportunities for public skating, additional hockey games and practices as well as USA Hockey clinics. The instructional clinics, scheduled from 3-6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 21, are intended to teach players ages 8-12 years old the fundamentals of USA Hockey’s American Development Model which emphasizes age-appropriate skill development. Members of the Blue Jackets coaching staff and team broadcasters are expected to lend a hand with the on-ice instruction.

Also during “Ice Week,” the Blue Jackets will host special skating sessions for a variety of community groups including military families, kids with life-threatening illnesses and other youth-focused charities.

Public skating sessions are free, however, space is limited and advance registration is requested. Fans may visit www.BlueJackets.com to register. Free parking will be available in the Arena Parking Garage (attached on the north side of Nationwide Arena), and discount concessions will be on sale. Fans are asked to enter through the OhioHealth Ice Haus, where skate rental will be available free of charge. The public skating schedule is as follows:

Sunday, Oct. 21 - 1-2:30 p.m.

Monday, Oct. 22 - 11-1 p.m.

Tuesday, Oct. 23 - 11-1 p.m.

Wednesday, Oct. 24 - 11-1 p.m.

Thursday, Oct. 25 - 11-1 p.m.

Saturday, Oct. 27 - 6-8 p.m.


“Ice Week” concludes with a Halloween Celebration for adults and kids of all ages on Sunday, Oct. 28 from 1-5 p.m. Admission is free and kids are encouraged to come in costume. Nationwide Arena will be decorated for the holiday and activities include a Halloween-themed skate, scavenger hunt, costume contest, carnival games, craft area, candy stations for kids as well as a special area for adults.
