Blue Jackets radio play-by-play announcer George Matthews set to call his 1,000th NHL game

COLUMBUS, OHIO – Columbus Blue Jackets radio play-by-play announcer George Matthews will call his 1,000th National Hockey League game on Saturday, February 16 when the Jackets visit the Phoenix Coyotes at Jobing.com Arena. The game can be heard on the Columbus Blue Jackets Radio Network, including flagship station Sports Radio 97.1 The Fan in Columbus and online at BlueJackets.com, beginning at 8 p.m. ET. The team will recognize Matthews’ milestone with a pre-game ceremony at Nationwide Arena on Tuesday, February 26 when the club returns home to host the Dallas Stars.

Matthews has served as the radio play-by-play voice of Blue Jackets hockey since the inaugural 2000-01 season. His first broadcast was a preseason game against the Pittsburgh Penguins from Mellon Arena on Sept. 15, 2000 and he has called nearly every preseason and regular season game in franchise history, as well as the club’s 2009 Stanley Cup Playoffs series against Detroit. Matthews has been calling the action with color analyst Bob McElligott since 2009-10 after teaming for eight seasons with Bill Davidge, who now serves as television analyst with announcer Jeff Rimer on FOX Sports Ohio. During the 2008-09 season, Matthews was a featured subject in the NHL Network’s inaugural series, “Voices.”

Prior to joining the Blue Jackets, Matthews’ broadcasting career included play-by-play work for the AHL’s Prince Edward Island (PEI) Senators, as well as the Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union (CIAU) National Championships, the Royal Bank Cup (Canada’s Junior A Hockey Championship) and the Allen Cup (Canada’s senior hockey championship). His experience in television includes a stint of national play-by-play work for Rogers Cable. In addition to his work behind the microphone, Matthews spent 23 years as a school teacher in his hometown of Summerside, Prince Edward Island.

The Blue Jackets return to action Friday when they visit the defending Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings at STAPLES Center. Game time is 10:30 p.m. ET. Live coverage on FOX Sports Ohio begins with the Blue Jackets Live pre-game show starting at 10 p.m. The game will also be broadcast live on the Columbus Blue Jackets Radio Network, including flagship station WBNS-FM 97.1 The Fan in Columbus, and online at BlueJackets.com.
