The annual Blue Jackets Cup high school hockey tournament wrapped up this weekend with the Newark club team defeating the Hilliard club team 2-0 in the championship game last Sunday afternoon at the OhioHealth Chiller North.

Newark, who headed into the tournament as the second seed, defeated the top-seeded Hilliard team twice during tournament play to claim the championship title. They beat Westerville 2-1 on Friday and Hilliard on Saturday 4-1 to make it to the final game.

The Blue Jackets Cup tournament consists of three levels of competition – varsity, junior varsity, and club. The Dublin Jerome Celtics claimed the varsity title after they beat the Olentangy Orange Pioneers on Feb. 10 at the OhioHealth Ice Haus.

The Hilliard Wildcats secured the JV championship title the following week after defeating Dublin Green on Feb. 17. Newark became the club champions with their win last Sunday.

All three championship teams defeated their opponents by a score of 2-0.

Like the club championship, the JV championship also saw a match-up between the top-seeded and second-seeded teams. The Wildcats headed into JV competition ranked as the top seed and defeated the JV teams from Westerville, St. Charles, and Olentangy Orange before taking on the second-seeded Dublin Green in the championship game.

With the Blue Jackets Cup champions decided, high school hockey moves into playoff season with the district finals taking place all across Ohio this weekend. The four winners from each district will compete for the state championship title at Nationwide Arena on March 8-9.
