"Random Thoughts" with Bobby Mac: March 11
Blue Jackets broadcaster Bob McElligott shares his insights on the past week in his latest blog
What a difference a week makes!
The Blue Jackets went from being the last place team to one of the hottest teams in the league during that span. It’s amazing how you can lose so many one-goal games and then turn around and start winning the same types of games. The reason for that is that the work ethic has stayed the same throughout. The team is playing the same game, but a couple of bounces per game are going in their favor. That’s really the difference: work hard and good things will eventually come.
Matt Calvert is known and respected around here, the majority of NHL fans couldn’t pick him out of a lineup -- but that could be on the verge of changing. This past week, Calvert showed how many different things he can bring to the table. There’s never a question of how hard he’s going to play. It’s all out, every shift. Thursday, against Vancouver, he carried a puck almost end to end, in overtime, before scoring the game-winner. He did have to fight through some checks, but it was almost as though the Canucks were thinking, “There’s no way this guy’s going to beat us.” He did, top shelf too.
On Saturday, Calvert swooped in to steal a puck from Niklas Kronwall and set up the first goal of the game. Saving the best for last, he put a sweet shootout move on Jimmy Howard to help win Sunday’s game. Up until now Calvert has probably felt like Rodney Dangerfield, getting no respect. Now teams will begin to pay a little more attention to him.
Am I obsessive-compulsive when it comes to listening to music? All week I saw ads promoting the Bon Jovi concert and then went out and downloaded his greatest hits to listen to while driving around. On Sunday afternoon, in Detroit, I was doing a little channel surfing and ran across the movie Mamma Mia. Next thing you know, I’m downloading ABBA songs to listen to while headed to the rink. Just a little weird, don’t you think?
Speaking of that movie, what happened to Pierce Brosnan? How do you possibly go from being James Bond to singing S.O.S alongside Meryl Streep? I mean, I could see Remington Steele doing that, but…
Sometimes I just don’t know when to say when. From March 1 through March 10, I called 11 games (2 sports) in 5 cities. That includes NHL games in Chicago, Detroit and Columbus as well as college basketball games in Dayton and Cincinnati, with a sprinkling of high school hockey play-off games here at home. I’d like to thank the Blue Jackets as well as the people at Time Warner Cable Sportschannel and Sports Time Ohio for allowing me to accomplish this feat.
This week is shaping up to be interesting for the Blue Jackets. Vancouver on Tuesday, Chicago on Thursday and Phoenix on Saturday is how it will play out. How long will this winning streak last? Stay tuned.
