Blue Jackets to select 14th overall at 2013 NHL Draft

COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets will have the 14th overall pick at the 2013 National Hockey League Entry Draft to be held on Sunday, June 30 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. The club’s draft position was determined by tonight’s Scotiabank NHL Draft Lottery.

The first 14 picks of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft are as follows: 1 – Colorado Avalanche; 2 – Florida Panthers; 3 – Tampa Bay Lightning; 4 – Nashville Predators; 5 – Carolina Hurricanes; 6 – Calgary Flames; 7 – Edmonton Oilers; 8 – Buffalo Sabres; 9 – New Jersey Devils; 10 – Dallas Stars; 11 – Philadelphia Flyers; 12 – Phoenix Coyotes; 13 – Winnipeg Jets; 14 – COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS. The remaining draft positions will be determined at the conclusion of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The Blue Jackets currently hold three first round picks in this year’s draft. In addition to selecting 14th overall, the Blue Jackets own the first round picks of the Los Angeles Kings (acquired with D Jack Johnson in exchange for Jeff Carter on Feb. 23, 2012) and New York Rangers (acquired with C Brandon Dubinsky, C Artem Anisimov and D Tim Erixon in exchange for LW Rick Nash, D Steve Delisle and a conditional third round pick in this year’s draft on July 23, 2012).

The Scotiabank Draft Lottery is a weighted lottery system that determines the order of selection for the first 14 picks of the Entry Draft. Clubs that did not qualify for this season’s Stanley Cup Playoffs, or clubs that acquired the first-round picks of those non-playoff clubs, participated in the lottery. This year, each participating club had an opportunity to earn the first overall pick if it won the lottery. In previous years, clubs could not move up more than four positions or down more than one position in the draft order based on its results.

Under this system, the Blue Jackets had the most regular-season points and smallest chance (0.5%) of winning the lottery. The percentage chance of being selected in the 2013 Scotiabank Draft Lottery was as follows, based on team finish: Florida (25.0 pct.), Colorado (18.8 pct.), Tampa Bay (14.2 pct.), Nashville (10.7 pct.), Carolina (8.1 pct.), Calgary (6.2 pct.), Edmonton (4.7 pct.), Buffalo (3.6 pct.), New Jersey (2.7 pct.), Dallas (2.1 pct.), Philadelphia (1.5 pct.), Phoenix (1.1 pct.), Winnipeg (0.8 pct.) and COLUMBUS (0.5 pct.).
