Development Camp 2013: The Rundown

Blue Jackets prospects from all over the world will take the ice at the OhioHealth Ice Haus at Nationwide Arena this week in their first shot to show the Blue Jackets coaching and staff where they’re at in their hockey careers.

You may be asking: what can we expect at Blue Jackets Development Camp? Let’s take a look.

What is development camp?

This camp is different from training camp. Development camp is an annual invitation-only based camp for Blue Jackets prospects, held by the Blue Jackets organization. Blue Jackets player development coach Chris Clark, a former NHL player and captain, is taking the lead on this year’s camp and aims to give the players a first-hand look at the organization and life in the NHL.

The four-day camp (or five days for goaltenders) camp is made up of a series of different activities, including on and off-ice workouts, as well as “outside hockey” events such as team dinners, a cooking class with the Blue Jackets’ chefs, and classes on managing finances and how to best use social platforms.

Who is invited to development camp?

There are 31 prospects scheduled to participate this year: 19 forwards, eight defensemen and four goalies. These players are all invited by the organization to participate in the camp, and have either been drafted by the Blue Jackets (all eight selections in the 2013 NHL Draft will be present for camp), acquired via trade/free agency or spent time in the organization playing with the Springfield Falcons.

Here is a breakdown of the players invited to this year’s development camp:

AHL/Springfield experience: (Forwards) Michael Chaput, Sean Collins, Jake Hansen, Boone Jenner, Dalton Smith, Trent Vogelhuber; (Defense) Thomas Larkin, Austin Madaisky, Will Weber.

2010 NHL Draft: (Goalie) Martin Ouellette.

2011 NHL Draft: (Forwards) Seth Ambroz, Lukas Sedlak, T.J. Tynan; (Defense) Mike Reilly; (Goalie) Anton Forsberg.

2012 NHL Draft: (Forwards) Josh Anderson, Daniel Zaar; (Defense) Gianluca Curcuruto, Ryan Murray; (Goalies) Oscar Dansk, Joonas Korpisalo.

2013 NHL Draft: (Forwards) Oliver Bjorkstrand, Marko Dano, Nick Moutrey, Peter Quenneville, Kerby Rychel, Markus Soberg, Alexander Wennberg; (Defense) Dillon Heatherington.

Signed Free Agents/Trades: 3 players. (Forwards) Michael Chaput, Jeremy Langlois; (Defense) Ilari Melart.

Who will be coaching at development camp?

The on-ice coaching staff running workouts will consist of Springfield Falcons (AHL) head coach Brad Larsen, Falcons assistant coaches Nolan Pratt and Jared Bednar, as well as Blue Jackets goaltending coach Ian Clark and development coach Chris Clark.

Why do players attend development camp?

As young prospects join the Blue Jackets organization, one of their first opportunities to be introduced to team management, staff and the city of Columbus is during development camp. With the camp being held shortly after the draft, it’s a good transition for players and gives them a chance to get on the ice and meet the faces they’ll be growing and developing with.

What is the development camp schedule?

Players arrived into town this past weekend and on Monday. Camp officially opens Tuesday, July 9 with breakfast in the Blue Jackets dressing room before players head over to medicals and off-ice testing sessions. Each of the four days consists of team meals, off-ice training and on-ice sessions with the coaching staff. The camp closes with exit medicals and exit interviews on Friday, July 12 for forwards and defensemen, and on Saturday for goaltenders.
