COLUMBUS, OHIO - Columbus Blue Jackets General Manager Jarmo Kekalainen announced two additions to the club’s scouting staff today as Ville Siren has been named head amateur scout and Josef Boumedienne has joined the organization as a European scout.

“Ville and Josef bring extensive knowledge and experience to our scouting department,” said Kekalainen. “Both had long and successful playing careers in North America and Europe and Ville has scouted extensively all over the world for the past 10 years. We believe they will be outstanding additions to our organization.”

Siren, 49, joins the Blue Jackets after spending nine years as a member of the St. Louis Blues scouting staff. During that time, he was instrumental in the club’s selection of current NHL players such as Vladimir Tarasenko (1st Rd., 2010), Lars Eller (1st Rd., 2007), Patrik Berglund (1st Rd., 2006), Nikita Nikitin (5th Rd., 2004) and Roman Polak (6th Rd., 2004). A defenseman, Siren was selected by the Hartford Whalers in the second round, 23rd overall, of the 1983 NHL Draft and made his NHL debut with the Pittsburgh Penguins during the 1985-86 season. He went on to register 14 goals and 68 assists for 82 points with 276 penalty minutes in 290 career NHL games with the Penguins and Minnesota North Stars from 1985-90. He also played nine seasons in Finland, Sweden and Switzerland before retiring in 1999 and represented Finland in numerous international competitions including the 1984 and 1992 Olympic Games, 1987 and 1991 Canada Cup tournaments, 1983 and 1984 World Junior Championships and 1985, 1991 and 1993 World Championships.

Boumedienne, 35, joins the club following a 17-year playing career as a defenseman. After being selected by New Jersey in the fourth round, 91st overall, in the 1996 NHL Draft, he played in the NHL and American Hockey League from 2000-04 and 2007-09, collecting 4-12-16 and 36 penalty minutes in 47 career NHL games with New Jersey, Tampa Bay and Washington and 33-143-176 and 443 penalty minutes in 295 career AHL games.
