Hockey School sessions begin Monday

The Columbus Blue Jackets and Chiller Ice Rinks have teamed up to host the 13th annual Blue Jackets Hockey School for kids and adults of all ages across Ohio.

The OhioHealth Chiller North location will offer hockey school sessions for boys, girls and adults, beginning Monday, July 29 and running through Friday, Aug. 16.

Registration is still open for multiple sessions, while others have a waiting list. Check the Chiller website for registration information and session schedules.

The goal of the hockey school is to get the Columbus community immersed in the sport of hockey and the Blue Jackets organization. Over 250 players are expected to participate in this year’s sessions.

The Blue Jackets have worked closely with youth hockey associations across the state of Ohio and USA Hockey, which have made the hockey school possible.

Hockey school sessions will include both on- and off-ice activities, such as skating drills, shootout practice, scrimmages, plyometrics exercises and nutritional talks, among other activities.

Instructors leading the camp include Blue Jackets staff, college hockey and local youth hockey coaches, as well as college and high school hockey players. A few NHL players may be in attendance to help out.

“We hope to have a lot of the younger NHL guys out there,” said Mason Fisher, fan development and marketing coordinator for the Blue Jackets and one of the organizers of hockey school. “Some of the players are young enough to have been in these camps just a few years ago. Plus, they have a lot more fun with the kids and it’s great for them to get involved in the community.”

Fisher also said that there are several new components to this year’s hockey school. One of these new additions is a girls’ camp, headed by Lisa Chesson, a member of the 2010 U.S. Olympic women’s ice hockey team and four-year member of the Ohio State women's hockey team. She will run all sessions with help from members of the Ohio State women’s hockey team. The sessions are open to girls age 8 and up.

Another new feature is the ability for adult camp participants to pick and choose which sessions they want to attend. Adult players can decide to pay $50 per day or participate in all three days of the adult school.

In the future, the Blue Jackets hope that the team’s on-ice success will lead to more growth in youth hockey players in Ohio.

“With the team’s success building, it’s going to open a lot more doors for us to be more involved and do unique programs,” said Fisher. “Making sure that the kids are enjoying hockey and keep playing it are the two biggest things we hope to accomplish with hockey school and the future of youth hockey.”
