Blue Jackets Hockey School ends

Over 230 kids participated in Blue Jackets Hockey School, which comes to a close Friday evening with the last girls' session at Chiller North.

Kids of all ages, from mini mites to adults, girls and boys, worked on their on- and off-ice skills during the week-long camps. Several special guests from the Blue Jackets, including players Ryan Murray, Boone Jenner, Tim Erixon and RJ Umberger, skated with the participants and signed autographs.

Overall, the parents, kids and instructors in charge of the camp had nothing but great things to say about Hockey School.

"We've had all positive feedback from the parents after they saw how much their kids improved after just five days of camp," said Mason Fisher, fan development and marketing coordinator for the Blue Jackets and one of the organizers of Blue Jackets Hockey School. "It's amazing when you think back to how the kids looked on Monday to how they look on Friday."

Though the three weeks had sessions for a variety of age groups, from 5 year olds to adults, everyone focused on the basics of hockey, then built up to scrimmages and games. With the help of the coaching staff and instructors, the kids learned from some of the most knowledgable hockey coaches in Columbus.

"We had a lot of repeat instructors plus several new ones," said Fisher. "Our coaching staff has continued to improve, which enhances the experience for the kids. We also had a lot of great junior instructors who have juniors or college experience, and they exceled with the kids."

The Blue Jackets plan to host Hockey School sessions again next summer.
