Blue Jackets place goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky on injured reserve with groin strain

COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets have placed goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky on Injured Reserve with a groin strain, club General Manager Jarmo Kekalainen announced today. Bobrovsky is expected to be sidelined four to five weeks after suffering the injury in the third period of Tuesday night’s 1-0 home win over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Bobrovsky, 25, is currently tied for 14th place in the NHL with 10 wins and has also posted a 2.72 goals-against-average, .909 save percentage and one shutout in 23 games this season. In 2012-13, he became the first Blue Jacket to win the Vezina Trophy as the National Hockey League’s top goaltender after posting a 21-11-6 record, 2.00 GAA, .932 SV% and four shutouts in 38 games. He has appeared in 144 career NHL games with the Blue Jackets and Philadelphia Flyers and is 73-45-18 with a 2.53 GAA and a .915 SV%. He has also posted five career shutouts, including an 18-save effort in a 6-0 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Air Canada Centre on November 25.

A native of Novokuznetsk, Russia, Bobrovsky was acquired by the Blue Jackets from the Flyers in exchange for second and fourth round picks in the 2012 NHL Draft and a fourth round pick in the 2013 NHL Draft on June 22, 2012. He won a bronze medal with Russia at the 2008 IIHF World Junior Championships and was invited to take part in his national team’s development camp this past summer in advance of the 2014 Winter Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

The Blue Jackets return to action on Friday when they host the Minnesota Wild at Nationwide Arena. Game time is 7 p.m. ET. Live coverage on FOX Sports Ohio begins with the Blue Jackets Live pre-game show at 6:30 p.m. The game will also be broadcast live on the Blue Jackets Radio Network, including flagship station Sports Radio 97.1 The Fan, and online at BlueJackets.com.
