WJC 2014: Day 2 Update

After a busy opening day of the 2014 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship on Thursday, there were only two games on the schedule in Malmo today.

One of those contests, Slovakia vs. Germany, was the opener for the Slovaks and the second in as many days for the Germans, who dropped their opener to Canada by a 7-2 final. Blue Jackets prospect Josh Anderson, who earned his way on to the Canadian roster, scored the first of Canada's seven goals yesterday.

Columbus prospects put forth a strong showing yesterday and such was the case again on Friday; Marko Dano (No. 27 overall in 2013) is one of the key returnees for Slovakia and his level of play will be a determining factor in how the occasionally-sneaky Slovaks fare in this World Junior tournament.

If Dano's opening-game showing is any indication, Slovakia's coaching staff and management has to like what it saw. Blue Jackets fans were certainly impressed, and Dano's two-goal effort (three points in total) was a hot topic on social media early Friday morning.

The victory for Slovakia was a dominating performance, and they allowed only one shot to Germany in the first 20 minutes. Dano's first goal was a point-blank chance on German goaltender Marvin Cupper, who misplayed the puck behind the net and gave Dano about as good a chance as a goal-scorer could ask for.

Dano's second goal increased Slovakia's lead to 4-0 early in the second period, and it was another grade-A opportunity right in front of the Germans' net.

Up next for Slovakia? A Saturday night match-up against the United States, and the Americans are coming off an impressive opening win over the Czech Republic.

NOTE: Blue Jackets prospect Markus Soberg missed his second straight game for Norway on Friday.
