Taormina and Tyrell assigned to American Hockey League’s Springfield Falcons

Blue Jackets Acquire D Matt Taormina, LW Dana Tyrell from Tampa Bay in Exchange for LW Jonathan Marchessault, LW Dalton Smith
The Columbus Blue Jackets have acquired defenseman Matt Taormina and forward Dana Tyrell from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for forwards Jonathan Marchessault and Dalton Smith, club General Manager Jarmo Kekalainen announced today. Taormina and Tyrell have been assigned to the American Hockey League’s Springfield Falcons.

Taormina, 27, has appeared in seven games with Tampa Bay this season, recording five hits and six shots on goal in 94:47 of action. He has recorded four goals and eight assists for 12 points as well as a plus/minus rating of +6 in 56 career NHL games with the Lightning and New Jersey Devils.

The native of Warren, Michigan has tallied 28-85-113 and a +7 rating in 215 career AHL games with the Syracuse Crunch, Albany/Lowell Devils and Binghamton Senators. The 5-10, 182-pound defenseman spent four seasons at Providence College from 2005-09 prior to turning pro, amassing 20-45-65 and a +7 rating in 141 career NCAA games. Tyrell, 24, has recorded 7-17-24 and 119 penalty minutes in 132 career NHL games, all with the Lightning. He was selected by Tampa Bay in the second round, 47th overall, of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

In 44 games with the Crunch this season, Tyrell has tallied 9-12-21 with 20 penalty minutes. The 5-10, 192-pound forward has recorded 28-52-80 in 162 career AHL games with the Syracuse/Norfolk franchise. He won a Calder Cup with the Admirals in 2012. Click HERE to view Tyrell’s NHL.com bio.

Marchessault, 23, has tallied 14-26-40 in 56 games this season with Springfield. He skated in two games with Columbus in 2012-13, registering one hit and a -1 rating. Smith, 21, was selected by the Blue Jackets in the second round, 34th overall, of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. He has tallied 7-11-18 and 227 PIM in 117 career AHL games, all with Springfield.
