The Numbers: Game 1
A statistical breakdown of Game 1 of the Stanley Cup quarterfinal series between the Blue Jackets and Penguins.

Welcome to The Numbers Game. Here, we'll break down the most important facts, figures and statistics from that night's game. Despite the final score, there's more to the game's story than the numbers on the scoreboard.

Here’s a look at four of the most notable numbers from the Blue Jackets’ 4-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs at the CONSOL Energy Center.

:43 – Seconds into the second period when Derek MacKenzie scored the third goal for the Blue Jackets. The goal was short-handed, unassisted and was MacKenzie’s first career Stanley Cup Playoff goal at the age of 32. It was also the first shorthanded goal in Blue Jackets postseason history.

1:37 – The time between all three goals scored in the second period. The Blue Jackets scored once (MacKenzie) and the Penguins scored twice within the first 2:19 of the second period. The last 17:41 of the second frame remained scoreless.

6 – The number of blocked shots by Blue Jackets defenseman Jack Johnson tonight. He has now blocked 134 shots in 83 games played this season (regular season and playoffs). The Jackets blocked 17 of the Penguins’ shot attempts tonight.

48 – The number of hits tallied by the Blue Jackets, compared to 27 by the Penguins. Boone Jenner registered seven hits in his first career Stanley Cup game, including a thundering hit on Rob Scuderi, and helped visibly frustrate the Penguins’ players at several times during the game.
