Quotables: Game 2
Post game quotes from Blue Jackets coach Todd Richards and the players following Game 2 at CONSOL Energy Center.

Blue Jackets head coach Todd Richards

On the momentum swing after Calvert’s SHG in the 2nd period…

TR: “They were very good in the first, but that’s something that I expected. They came out, they played hard, they played fast and at that moment they were playing at a different level than us. The shorthanded goal in the second period…I thought was the difference-maker in the game. It gave hope to our guys. It was 3-1 at the time, and it made it 3-2, and you could feel it on the bench. I thought from that moment on that we played a very strong game.”

On the offensive pressure after the momentum swing in the 2nd period…

TR: “Versus this team you have to make them play a 200-foot game. If it’s anything shorter, it plays into their strength. I think we did a good job getting it in, and we had some speed on the forecheck. We were able to pin them more quickly than maybe they wanted to. When you do that, you’re forcing them to make more quicker plays, hopefully creating the turnovers. Once we got the turnovers, we were able to play with it. (It was) a lot different than Game 1, where we didn’t have those offensive zone shifts, where you were able to sustain pressure and puck possession. Again, the 200-foot game and forcing these guys to have to play in their own zone, that’s were they have to spend some energy, and it takes from their offensive side of the game…they’re a talented team, a dangerous team, and those are some of the things that we have to continue to do in this series.”

On the Crosby-Dubinsky matchup…

TR: “When it was 3-1, I wasn’t going to chase the matchup anymore, and I think the power play and penalty kill had something to do with that — whether Brandon was in the box, or if I was using him on the penalty kill or power play…I think once we got going, I saw the success of other guys against Crosby. It wasn’t something that I needed to chase.”

Blue Jackets left wing Matt Calvert

On the feeling of scoring his first playoff game-winning goal…

MC: “It’s awesome man, every year I’ve been watching the Stanley Cup Playoffs. You see guys score the OT winner, and you always want to be in that position and know how it feels. It’s a tough feeling to explain, and it happens so fast. Everyone jumped on me and I haven’t had time to think about it. It’s a great feeling, a great win for our team. Our first goal is complete and now we want to go back and play in front of our home crowd and have some fun.”

On going back to Nationwide Arena on Monday with a 1-1 series tie…

MC: “It’s going to be great, our fans have really been supporting us during the past few weeks, especially in the run for the playoffs. We’re excited, I think they’re excited, and hopefully we can get them behind us, put them on our back and go from there.”

Blue Jackets defenseman Jack Johnson

On his game-tying power-play goal in the 3rd period…

JJ: “(Ryan Johansen) made the play. There was a huge scramble going on and kind of some broken plays, so I just got lost over there on the back side. Nobody picked me up or anything, and Ryan made a great one-handed play over to me and I just tried not to miss a completely empty net.”

On the importance of a win in the first two games…

JJ: “It’s big in terms of us winning the series. It’s important if you start a series on the road if you can pick up one game on the road and come back home. You’ve put yourself in a good position and we’ve let the world know that this is going to be a real playoff series. Everyone’s picked Pittsburgh to win it, but we’ve got a lot of guys in here that have fun proving people wrong.”
