Quotables: Game 6
Post game quotes from Blue Jackets coach Todd Richards and the players following Game 6 at Nationwide Arena.

Blue Jackets center Ryan Johansen

On Pittsburgh's offensive success...

RJ: "I thought they played with a lot of speed right from the start. We had trouble containing it for the first 40 minutes. Malkin obviously had a huge game for them and he made us pay on a couple of opportunities where he had space."

On third period surge...

RJ: "You never know what can happen. In a couple of cases before, there have been teams that come back from 4-0 deficits. We said in here that we're going to leave it all out on the ice and we'll see what happens. For the first eight minutes, we weren't creating much, but found a way to get one in there and we just kept coming and coming. We just fell a little short for one more."

On the team's character in the third period...

RJ: "Our guys played with a lot of pride there in the last period and, like I said, we just wanted to leave it all out on the ice and I think we did that in the third period."

On the post-game standing ovation...

RJ: "You can't thank them enough for the support all year and especially in these playoffs that we've had with the fifth line. It's been one heck of an experience for myself and I had so much fun. We're not satisfied by any means in here by what we accomplished and now we have the first (playoff) wins in organization history. We'll be back next year and we're going to be better."

Blue Jackets defenseman Jack Johnson

On crowd being ready for next season...

JJ: "I think it's just as great of a sports town or hockey town as there could be in America. It has just been a little under the radar the past few years. We're going to win a perennial winner here that this town can be proud of and I think we can have that building rocking like that every night."

On having a young team moving forward...

JJ: "You don't want to just be a flash in the pan, you want to be a perennial winner. The Red Wings epitomize that. During my life time, they're always a contender and it's always what you're trying to build. We want to build a perennial winner here in Columbus year in and year out. We want people to be talking about us for contending. We plan on having many deep playoff runs here."

On what younger players can take away from series...

JJ: "They got their first playoff series in, but I think they handled it just as well as anyone. They weren't phased by it. I thought they did an exceptional job. There's no reason for them to be phased by it. it's still the same hockey game. With our group of guys, we didn't care who we played in the first round. You have to beat everybody anyways if you want to win the Stanley Cup."

On whether or not this season is the start of something special...

JJ: "Yeah, especially because we feel like we came up way short. Our goal wasn't to lose in the first round of the playoffs. We set the bar as high as it can possibly be here and everyone's on board in this room. We'll come back bigger, better, stronger next year."

Blue Jackets coach Todd Richards

On making a late push in the 3rd period…

TR: “I felt that with four and a half minutes left after the third goal that anything could happen. I really did. The way that the game was going, you could feel the energy. Our bench had some life — we had done it basically two games ago. Last time in this building we found a way to do it. My thought was that it was going to happen and anything could happen.”

On the team not giving up in the 3rd period despite a 4-0 deficit…

TR: “It’s a credit to our guys. Pittsburgh in the first period, they were skating, they were playing a fast game, and we weren’t. Credit to our guys, down 4-0 coming out in the third period. You’ve gotta thank the fans, too … Not that I was expecting boos, I certainly wasn’t expecting that, but the support that the players got from the fans, that we all did, to me says a lot. Credit to the guys, the players, for sticking with it and for finishing it the right way. You could come out easily, in a game like this, and do the wrong things. I mean be undisciplined and do some foolish things, and I think the guys stuck with it. We talked about a sense of pride and I think the guys — everything they built this year, earning trust, our fans trust, coming out and finishing it the right way. I think the fans were appreciative of that.”

On the fans staying and cheering “C-B-J” after the series loss…

TR: “I think our guys earned it, I really do. Fans have been waiting for a long time for something to feel good about. There’s been things throughout the course of time here that have got them excited. I think the way that this team has played all season … once we got past our struggles in the first part of the year. The way that the guys played, it didn’t surprise me, because I think the guys deserved it.”

On the growth of the younger players this season…

TR: “It is nice to see a lot of our young guys take a lot of steps this year. Your youth a lot of times is gonna drive it with the energy and the enthusiasm. We had older guys like Dubinsky and Jack Johnson lead the way with the way that they played the game, too. To see Ryan Johansen take the steps that he did this year, and Boone Jenner coming in not really having any expectations about where Boone was going to fit … And then you see a guy like Ryan Murray, David Savard, Cam Atkinson, Matty Calvert — we’re a younger team. To come out against a team like Pittsburgh, in the first period they were better than us, and probably a good portion of the second period they were better than us. Again, credit to our guys, they finished the game the right way.”
