NHL Draft Profile: Robby Fabbri

“Undersized” is an overused description of hockey players these days, and Robby Fabbri is another example.

At 5-foot-10 and 164 lbs., Fabbri could be considered a smaller player, but don’t let that fool you. If you’ve been watching the Memorial Cup in London this week, you’ve seen an engaged and tenacious player on the puck at all times.

Fabbri is known as a hard-working player and a very good skater, which ties into his quickness and ability to back up defenders and create chances. He’s proven that he can score from anywhere, and that’s a combination of his willingness to go into the hard areas to score along with a pro-caliber shot.

The Mississauga, Ont., native has played the past two seasons with the Guelph Storm (OHL), who are currently competing in the Memorial Cup and were OHL champions in 2013-14. Along with Blue Jackets’ prospect Kerby Rychel, who was traded to Guelph mid-season, Fabbri helped lead the Storm to its first Robertson Cup championship since 2004.

Despite missing four post-season games due to injury, Fabbri still ranked third in the OHL with 28 points in the playoffs (13 goals and 15 assists), trailing teammates Rychel and Zach Mitchell in the category.

During his rookie OHL season in 2012-13, Fabbri scored 10 goals and added 23 assists in 59 games. His sophomore season saw an increase in production, as he registered 45 goals and 42 assists for 87 points, which was 14th-best in the OHL.

Along with several other draft prospects in this year’s class, Fabbri skated with the gold-medal winning Under-20 Team Canada at the 2013 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament. Following his performance in the OHL this past season, he was selected to play for Team Cherry in the 2014 CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game.

This is what ISS Hockey had to say about Fabbri:

“Points in all but 10 games played this season. Exciting complete package… competes with high-end offensive game.”

Here’s what Kyle Woodlief from USA Today said about his game:

“We just love his up-tempo game, lightning quickness, smarts and aggressive play down low among the big redwoods. Nothing deters him.”

Storm GM Mike Kelly on Fabbri:

“Robby is the most dynamic 17-year-old forward to come through the Storm organization since Jeff O’Neill. Absolutely driven to be an elite NHL player.”
