Sonny Milano announces decision to join Plymouth Whalers (OHL) this fall
Blue Jackets draft pick Sonny Milano will not be playing for Boston College, instead opting to play in the OHL this season.

Sonny Milano had a change of heart.

It was announced over the weekend that Milano, the Blue Jackets' first pick (16th overall) in the 2014 NHL Draft, will play for the OHL's Plymouth Whalers this season.

Originally, Milano had committed to play for Boston College, but he has instead decided to go the junior hockey route on his way to the NHL.

The topic of "where will Sonny play?" has followed the young man from Massapequa, New York, even before he was drafted, with rumors and speculation running rampant in the last few weeks.

The Blue Jackets - who had Milano rated very high on their draft board - told Milano and his family that they would fully support either decision.

Milano flew to Boston over the weekend to inform Eagles head coach Jerry York of his decision.

“Sonny has informed me he will sign a contract with Columbus," York said in a statement issued by BC Hockey. "They will dictate his path as he embarks upon his pro career.”

An agreement on an entry level contract has not yet been reached between Milano and the Blue Jackets, but with Milano under contract, it's expected that he will participate in both the NHL Prospects Tournament in Traverse City, Mich., and Blue Jackets training camp in September.

Milano, a dynamic and skilled forward who starred for the United States National Team Development Program (USNTDP), is a huge "get" for Plymouth and especially so on the heels of acquiring center Mathew Campagna from the Sudbury Wolves earlier in the week.

In 58 games with the U.S. Under-18 national team in 2013-14, Milano scored 29 goals and racked up 86 points while adding 10 points in seven games for Team USA at the U18 World Junior Hockey Championship.
