You'll often hear NHL coaches and players speak about the importance of special teams when it comes to overall success. Winning the "special teams battle" is a huge focal point for teams as they try to take advantage of opponents' mistakes. This is especially important on home ice, when teams look to dictate the pace and draw penalties - and five teams stand out as the league's best.
Let's take a look at the NHL's top-5 home-ice power play units.
TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS
2013-14 HOME ICE PP%: 25.7
Much like the Penguins, the Maple Leafs boast a highly-skilled forward group of their own and it makes for a dynamic power play. The power play runs through star sniper Phil Kessel, but the Leafs have other talented players like Tyler Bozak, Joffrey Lupul and James van Riemsdyk who have proven their ability to put the puck in the net. Word to opponents: stay out of the box at Air Canada Centre, and you'll drastically improve your chances.
