Blue Jackets-Blues Preview

The St. Louis Blues are one of the best home teams in the NHL, and hosting the league-worst Columbus Blue Jackets may only reinforce that status.

The Blues look to rebound from a loss on the road by re-establishing their home dominance of the Blue Jackets in a Sunday night Central Division matchup.

St. Louis (18-9-4) is 12-3-1 at Scottrade Center, where it's won eight of its last 10.

The Blues are 11-1-1 in their last 13 home meetings with the Blue Jackets (9-19-4), whom they also defeated 2-1 in Columbus on Nov. 27, extending their overall series winning streak to four.

St. Louis had a 40-20 advantage in shots on goal Saturday night in Nashville, but lost 2-1 in a shootout as its four-game winning streak was snapped.

"One of our goals is to get 40 shots a game, and we peppered the net," said center T.J. Oshie, who scored with 3:52 left in regulation before missing his shootout attempt. "I think one thing we have to do is get more traffic in front of their goaltender. It's tough when you get that many shots on the goaltender and he wins the game for the other team."

Oshie, Alex Steen and David Backes are tied for the team lead with 10 goals each.

Backes has two goals and five assists in his last six home meetings with the Blue Jackets, and scored the eventual game-winner on the power play in last month's Blues victory at Columbus.

St. Louis left wing David Perron missed that meeting while sitting out the first 24 games of the season due to a concussion. He has five points in six games since returning, and has four in his last three matchups with Columbus.

One area where the Blues could use a spark is their power play, which ranks last in the NHL at 11.1 percent but did manage to go 1 for 6 on Saturday.

The unit has converted 22 of 58 chances over the past 13 home meetings with the Blue Jackets, and 6 of 8 in the last three.

The Blue Jackets, owners of an NHL-low 22 points, are 3-9-2 on the road as they begin a three-game trip.

They concluded a 1-3-1 homestand with Saturday's 3-2 loss to Tampa Bay, falling behind by two goals in the opening period despite an 11-5 shot advantage.

"You can't get behind in this league," coach Scott Arniel said. "We had chances but couldn't beat their goaltender early on. We had to find a way to do that, especially when we had momentum going our way."

Rick Nash scored his second goal in four games for Columbus, bringing his season total to a team-high 10. Only two of those goals have come on the road, though, where he also has six assists in 14 games.

Nash came up empty on six shots against the Blues last month, but the Columbus captain left wing has 11 goals and 10 assists in his last 18 visits to St. Louis.

Vinny Prospal's leads the Blue Jackets with 26 points, including six in his last six games after getting two assists Saturday.

He has five assists and no goals in 20 career games against the Blues.
