Ohio High School Hockey
Once a player enters into high school they have the option of playing high school instead of (or as well as) playing for their youth organization. There are currently three different levels of high school hockey in the Columbus area. Teams play at the varsity, club or junior varsity level.

Varsity hockey is officially recognized by the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) and teams must adhere to the rules set forth by this governing body. Varsity hockey is officially recognized by the school they represent. Club hockey is not officially recognized by the OHSAA or the school and they receive no formal support from their individual schools. In most cases the junior varsity teams are secondary teams for the existing varsity and club programs, making some of them officially recognized by the OHSAA. In many cases, there is not a tremendous difference in caliber between a varsity team and a club team; the difference is simply the club team has not obtained varsity status.

Blue Jackets Cup
presented by Accelerate Ohio

The Columbus Blue Jackets are proud to support and work with the local high school hockey teams to host the Blue Jackets Cup. Established in 2002, the Blue Jackets Cup is an annual season ending three division tournament for varsity, junior varsity, and club level teams in the Columbus area. Championship teams have their school name engraved on the trophy, which is on display year round in Nationwide Arena.

The varsity division tournament of the Blue Jackets Cup took place on February 13-15, 2009. Eight local varsity high school teams took part in this single elimination tournament. Teams participating included Dublin Coffman, Dublin Jerome, Gahanna Lincoln, Olentangy, Olentangy Liberty, St. Charles Prep., Upper Arlington and Worthington Kilbourne.

**Game by game results from the Varisty, Junior Varsity and Club Tournaments

The Dublin Coffman Shamrocks defeated the Olentangy Liberty Patriots by a score of 2-0. It was actually a 1-0 game with an empty net goal in the closing seconds. The only real goal in the game came in the first few minutes of the game, and it was a shorthanded goal. From that point on it was a scoreless contest.

Seven teams participated in the club division tournament that was held February 20-22, 2009. The teams that participated included Athens, Hilliard/Southwest, Northeast (Bexley-New Albany), Newark, Olentangy, PRPC (Pickerington-Reynoldsburg-Pataskala-Canal Winchester) and Westerville. In the end, the Newark Generals won their first championship by defeating PRPC 3-1 in the title game.

The junior varsity tournament was held February 20-22, 2009. The competition included teams (Athens, Dublin (two teams), Gahanna, Linoln, Hilliard/Southwest, Newark, Olentangy, PRPC, St.Charles, Upper Arlinton, Westerville, and Worthington). Newark Generals captured their first title by defeating St. Charles Prep 5-2 in the championship game, marking the first time in Blue Jackets Cup history that an organization has won two of the three division cups.
