Jackets extend points streak to eight games in SO loss

The Vancouver Canucks got back on the winning track Tuesday.

In the process, they put an end to the Columbus Blue Jackets' win streak.

Roberto Luongo stopped 26 of 27 shots before going 3-for-3 in the shootout as the Canucks snapped a four-game slide with a 2-1 victory at Nationwide Arena.

Jason Garrison scored the lone goal in regulation for Vancouver (12-7-6), which snapped an 0-2-2 skid and begins a four-game homestand Thursday against the Nashville Predators.

Sergei Bobrovsky made 37 saves for the Blue Jackets (10-12-5), who entered Tuesday's action as winners of five straight games. Mark Letestu scored for Columbus, which set a franchise mark with an eight-game point streak but fell short of a record six-game win streak.

"When it comes down to a shootout, it's kind of a crapshoot out there," Letestu said. "Tonight, the goalie was better than the shooters."

Both goals in regulation were scored in the second period and came at even strength. With Vinny Prospal setting up a screen in front of the net, Letestu scored on a backhand rebound of his own shot at 3:04. It was his sixth goal of the season.

Garrison evened things with 3:49 remaining, two seconds after a power play expired, when his shot from the top of the right circle beat Bobrovsky, who is the reigning "First Star" of the week in the National Hockey League. It was Garrison's fourth goal of the season, his first since Feb. 26.

It was the lone blemish through regulation for Bobrovsky, who prior to Garrison's goal made five saves in the first 1:18 of a Canucks' power play.

"He's been great," Columbus defenseman Jack Johnson said of Bobrovsky. "He gave us a chance to win tonight."

Mason Raymond scored the only goal in the shootout. Ryan Johansen, Matt Calvert and Letestu all came up empty against Luongo; Raymond beat Bobrovsky after the Blue Jackets' goaltender denied Chris Higgins in the opening round.

Columbus will play the second of a five-game homestand Thursday against the Chicago Blackhawks.

"Obviously we have to play better," Blue Jackets forward Brandon Dubinsky said. "Bob was huge for us again. We were still in the game. We had our opportunities. We played a good third period, but that's not enough."
