Stars-Blue Jackets Preview
Dallas Stars vs. Columbus Blue Jackets

The Dallas Stars have eight 100-point finishes in their last 10 seasons. To break the century mark again this year, they'll need to get better at closing games.

After blowing third-period leads in consecutive overtime losses, the Stars look to bounce back on Wednesday when they visit the Columbus Blue Jackets, who hope to remain undefeated at home.

Dallas (2-2-2) took a 2-1 lead into the third period of its game against Calgary on Friday, but gave up a game-tying score midway through the period. The Stars committed a costly turnover deep in their zone that led to Calgary's game-winner at the 3:20 mark of the extra session.

On Saturday, the Stars had held Chicago scoreless until the Blackhawks tied the game with less than two seconds remaining in regulation. Forty-three seconds into overtime, the Stars gave up another goal to fall 2-1.

"It was really frustrating to be so close, only 1.5 seconds," said Dallas backup goalie Tobias Stephan after nearly recording a shutout in his first NHL game. "It was a tough loss and very disappointing."

Stephan faced 20 shots in the third period, while the Stars managed only four.

"I feel bad for him," Dallas coach Dave Tippett said. "He played a helluva game. He was just under so much pressure."

Dallas will likely make some offensive adjustments after just its second pair of back-to-back non-regulation losses since the beginning of the 2005-06 season.

"We basically have to get back to the real basic simple things we do on the ice. Making the right decisions, and right choices with the puck," forward Mike Modano, who has spent all of his 18 NHL seasons with the Dallas franchise, told the team's official Web site. "We need to work on extending leads when we have them. I think the more we play the more we get into the flow of the year and things will come. It will work itself out."

Regular starter Marty Turco is expected to be back in net for the Stars. Turco is 2-1-1 with a 2.23 goals-against average in four starts this season, and has dominated Columbus (2-2-0) throughout his career. He's 10-1-1 with a 1.90 goals-against average in 12 career games - including two shutouts - against the Blue Jackets.

Turco's strong play has helped Dallas to an impressive history against Columbus. Since the Columbus franchise began play in 2000, the Stars have gone 18-3-3 against the Blue Jackets, including 8-2-2 at Nationwide Arena.

Last season, however, the Blue Jackets went 3-1-0 against the Stars to win a season series against them for the first time.

Columbus has a good chance of building on last season's success if it can continue its strong play at home. The Blue Jackets have outscored their opponents 7-0 to win their first two home games of the season, and can match their best home start in franchise history with a victory Wednesday.

Columbus, though, didn't have much success on the road on Saturday, when they lost 5-1 at Colorado. Goalie Pascal Leclaire opened the season with the back-to-back home shutouts, but gave up five goals to the Avalanche.

Leclaire has allowed five or more goals six times in his four-year career, including once in his only start against Dallas - a 5-3 defeat on Dec. 21, 2005.
