COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -The Columbus Blue Jackets refused to quit even though they hadn't won a game this season when trailing after two periods.

David Vyborny scored his second goal of the night with 1:54 left in overtime and Columbus rallied from a two-goal deficit to beat the Boston Bruins 5-4 on Tuesday.

"We showed up in the third and were able to take over the game," said Vyborny, who also assisted on the tying goal.

The Blue Jackets had been 0-16 when trailing going into the final period. But they earned a two-man advantage late in the third and pulled goalie Fredrik Norrena to make it 6-on-3. Sergei Fedorov then tied the score at 4 with his second goal of the game with only 23 seconds left in regulation.

"David found me," Fedorov said about his 12th goal of the season. "It was wonderful to see that he had the composure to make that pass. All I needed was to have a solid shot on net and not do anything crazy."

Jason Chimera also scored for Columbus.

Patrice Bergeron extended his point streak to nine games with a goal and an assist for Boston, which had its three-game winning streak snapped.

"Rarely can you stop a 3-on-6 with the time that was left," Boston coach Dave Lewis said about the 46 seconds the Blue Jackets had to work the puck.

Brad Boyes, Wayne Primeau and Stanislav Chistov also scored for the Bruins, who tried to hang onto their lead behind 19 third-period saves by Tim Thomas. Mark Mowers added two assists.

Fedorov tied it with a one-timed slap shot from the right circle on a pass from Vyborny.

"With a one-goal lead on the road, you would like to get those wins," Thomas said. "I'm not sure if it was a matter of them pouring on the pressure or if we still have our Christmas legs."

Vyborny won it with his ninth goal - on a breakaway - while the Bruins were caught making a line change.

"You got a world-class player on the breakaway," Columbus coach Ken Hitchcock said. "You pretty much know it's in."

With the score tied 2-all entering the second period, Boston gained the momentum behind four power plays and jumped ahead with two goals.

Working off the left half boards, Brad Stuart zipped a centering pass to Chistov, who tipped the puck between the legs of Norrena to make it 3-2 at 7:49.

Skating on a two-man advantage 3 minutes later, an open Bergeron curled from the left post and snapped a low shot past Norrena to give the Bruins a two-goal lead with his 12th.

"We battled hard," Lewis said.

The Blue Jackets found a spark late in the period thanks to Vyborny.

He took a centering pass from Aaron Johnson with his back to the goal, faked inside, spun to the outside and beat a sprawling Thomas with a backhand shot to pull Columbus within a goal.

Despite the goal, Hitchcock was disappointed with his team's effort.

"The second period was the worst period we've played all year," he said.

Despite being dominated early, Boston grabbed the lead when Boyes redirected a point shot by Andrew Alberts to open the scoring at 6:39 of the first.

Columbus responded with two goals in a 1:09 span midway through the period.

After Stuart misplayed the puck near the Boston blue line, Chimera took a pass from Dan Fritsche, cut in toward Thomas and beat him with a backhand move at 12:14.

On a Boston power play, Rick Nash blocked a shot at the Columbus blue line, resulting in a 2-on-1 rush for Columbus. Nash threaded a pass from the left wing to Fedorov, who beat Thomas with a high shot to make it 2-1 at 13:23.

Primeau tied it 2 minutes later, beating a screened Norrena with a wrist shot from the slot.

"You cannot win unless you play with competitive composure," Hitchcock said. "That was the whole focus for us."

Notes: The game was Boston's first of three straight against Western Conference teams to start a four-game road trip. ... Bruins LW P.J. Axelsson returned to the lineup after missing 10 games with a broken foot. ... The Blue Jackets put starting goalie Pascal Leclaire (hamstring) and RW Anson Carter (sprained shoulder) on injured reserve.
