COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -Once again, Niklas Hagman supplied a big goal for the Dallas Stars when it was most needed.
Hagman's shootout backhander powered the Stars to a 2-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday night.
Hagman, the 10th player in the shootout, swooped in on goalie Pascal Leclaire and may have surprised him with his move away from the forehand.
"I've tried it a couple of times in practice," Hagman said of the move. "Maybe it's something the goalies don't expect when a guy comes right in front of you and takes a backhanded shot, five hole. It managed to go in."
It was the latest bit of heroics for Hagman, who leads the Stars in game-winning goals with five, tying him with San Jose's Jeremy Roenick for the NHL lead.
"Nobody knew what Haggy was going to do, including us, and it turned out all right," coach Dave Tippett said.
The Stars have won both meetings with Columbus this season in shootouts at Nationwide Arena - the only wins Dallas has in three shootouts this season.
Chris Conner had the Stars' goal early in the third period, matching Nikolai Zherdev's first-period goal for Columbus.
Dallas was playing its last game of a season-long six-game road trip, while Columbus was returning home after a Western swing to start a five-game homestand.
Marty Turco had 25 saves for Dallas, with Leclaire stopping 33.
"At one point in the third period, you think, 'This is a goalie duel.' And you try to hold up your end of the bargain," Turco said. "When we talk about goaltending around here, it's all about giving the team a chance to win. Most of all, it's a team effort and doing your part. And mine was to match it and keep it at 1-1 until we could find a crack - and we did."
Zherdev scored in the shootout, with Mike Modano converting for Dallas. Columbus' Curtis Glencross then scored and was matched by Mike Ribeiro. After the Blue Jackets' Gilbert Brule was stopped on a poke check by Turco, Hagman supplied the winner.
Hagman redeemed himself for an early mistake.
Rick Nash set up the regulation Columbus goal, stepping in to steal the puck from Hagman deep in the offensive zone. Nash then slid a pass into the slot where Zherdev redirected it past Turco for his ninth of the year.
Zherdev only had 10 goals all last season and didn't score his ninth until Feb. 18.
The Stars finally broke through just over 3 minutes into the third period. Conner got behind two Blue Jackets - and was mugged by them, with a delayed penalty called - then faked and went backhand to slide the puck between Leclaire's leg pads.
"It was a great pass. It was right on my tape. I was kind of surprised, myself, that I caught it," Conner said of the assist from defenseman Nicklas Grossman. "I just kind of kept going to the net and I was able to beat him."
The Blue Jackets fell to 1-5 in shootouts.
"We had nothing at the end," coach Ken Hitchcock said. "We were unlucky not to get two points because we were ahead in the shootout. We squeezed everything we could."
